Blog Post #5

I have learned the importance of sampling. Choosing the sampling for my research could really sway the findings, so that was a major point of contention for my project. I also learned how time-consuming research is and had to really utilize my time well this semester. This all has taught me to be super organized so I can manage my time well. It also taught me to put in the work prior to conducting research by planning the research thoroughly beforehand. Thank you all for following along with my blog this semester!

Blog Post #4

I am currently working on implementing the revisions that were left on my literature review. I have a good idea of the work that I have to complete for my proposal. Recently I have been spending a majority of my time conducting my research (content analysis), but this will set me up nicely for the rest of the semester. I will meet with Dr. B on November 5th, so I will be able to look over my proposal with her then.

Blog Post 3: Research Gap

My research topic has a knowledge gap. Below is the paragraph from my literature review where I touch on this topic: Though this literature goes in depth about how language is manipulated, and then weaponized to discriminate against women, there is a knowledge gap. There is a lot of qualitative data out there about language, but not very much quantitative data. One way to create quantitative data from language analysis is a content analysis. There needs to be a content analysis on gender's impact on language. Specifically, the language in sports.

Blog Post 2: Research Topic/Issue with Tentative Sources

Below are 10 tentative sources for my research. Sources 6 and 7 are unrelated to my research topic but their methods (content analysis) is similar to what I will be doing so those sources are useful in that regard. 80% of the sources are from technical writing journals. Source 1: Emergent Feminist Technical Communication by Elizabeth A Flynn Source 2: Towards a Feminist Historiography of Technical Communication by John F Flynn Source 3: The critical eye, the gendered lens, and "situated" insights--feminist contributions to professional communication by Linda LaDuc and Amanda Goldrick-Jones Source 4: A feminist perspective on technical communicative action: exploring how alternative worldviews affect environmental remediation efforts by Susan Mallon Ross Source 5: Stigma in the Comments Section: A Feminist and Anti-Feminist Discussions Online by ADD AUTHOR Source 6: Artifactual dimensions of visual rhetoric: What a content analysis of 114 peer-reviewed articles reveals about ...

Blog Post 1: Topic Interests

Hello Everyone! I decided for my capstone class to analyze if gender impacts the language and word choice used when comparing female sports versus male sports. I am planning on using interviews, broadcasts, press releases, and social media posts as my primary sources for this research. I will be looking at frequency of various words or phrases. I am also considering how this research translates to the corporate world in the sense if gender impacts language used in business meetings, emails, and other forms of communication. I am excited for this class to help guide me through the research aspect because it can be daunting to begin a new research project.
